Recovery Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) in Textile, Paper Industry

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble synthetic polymer, widely used in papermaking, textiles and many other applications.

PVA is white and odorless, usually in granular form or in solution in waste.

PVA is used as a support agent in the emulsion polymerization process, such as coating the surface of fabric fibers, helping to create a protective layer and enhancing the durability of fabric fibers, used to lubricate fabric fibers, makes the spinning and weaving process easier, creates shine, softness and wrinkle resistance for fabrics, and creates polyvinyl acetate dispersions.

The PVA recovery system of Confident Engineering India Private Limited helps recover about 90% of PVA from waste, saving about 50% of costs.

PVA is used as a yarn sizing formula to achieve the required yarn properties and performance in the weaving process. Using 100% PVA formulation for some fabrics significantly increases COD or BOD levels compared to starch, while also providing opportunities for recovery and reuse according to size. The COD level in PVA waste is very high, reaching about 40,000ppm.

By recovering PVA, the amount of COD in wastewater is reduced by about 80%, the remainder can be easily treated by an Effluent Treatment plant (ETP). The recovered PVA is then sent to a pressure sand filter, where it forms a cake layer, which is then dissolved in acid to maintain the PVA in liquid form.
